The LTA is determined that everyone, from all
social and ethnic backgrounds has the opportunity to play tennis.
For this reason, the City Tennis Club programme was launched in
2001, the goal being that there would be one nominated, official
such club in approximately 50 cities. We are proud to be Sheffield’s
City Tennis Club.
The aim is that through our newly surfaced
courts, we are able to offer a good quality, safe environment and
encourage those who have not previously picked up a racket to give
the game a try. Allied to this is a comprehensive coaching
programme, aimed at adults and children alike. To this end, we work
closely with the LTA and Activity Sheffield – part of Sheffield City
Council.
The club provides affordable coaching and a
programme of match play competing against other tennis clubs, as
well as Red Tennis sessions at Paces centre on Packhorse Lane on
Friday evenings where children as young as five can get involved in
the sport.
Stephen Hague, club member said “we need to
open every avenue for kids to play and the City Tennis Club
Programme does just that, by improving facilities and taking coaches
to their back yard. The measure of our success is witnessed by the
participation of our 4 young players – none of whom had played
competitively before this summer – in the recent national finals.
“Who knows, High Green today, Wimbledon tomorrow?”
The initiative is already paying dividends for
our younger players. For the first time in 10 years we entered a
junior team in the Under 15 Sheffield and District League, and the
squad finished a creditable mid table in the first year. As more
players come through the coaching system, we hope to do even better
in 2007.
